Heretic Heavy Tank

Battle-scarred Heretic heavy tank with vertical armour plates, a howitzer, and a sacrificed prisoner hanging from the front plate.

Trench Crusade has lots of amazing character designs, but what would its fighting vehicles look like? As an artist who mainly draws vehicles, my ideas may be 'too practical' or 'not horrifying enough', but I wanted to give it a fair shot anyway.

So how could I make a Heretic Legion tank look intimidating? Instead of covering the design with blood, skulls or hellish carvings, I focused again on its form. Real-life tanks rely on sloped armour to increase effective thickness without adding too much weight. I took the opposite approach and gave it completely flat, vertical armour plates. The total absence of angling implies that Heretic materials are so advanced that the Faithful's firepower is irrelevant, giving the tank a sense of cold indifference, arrogance and contempt.

Weighing over 200 tons, this heavy tank is the Faithful's most feared moving tombstone. Its massive armour plates, forged in the Lake of Fire, shrug off most projectiles. Armed with a 203 mm howitzer firing sub-calibre 100 mm AP rounds, it can punch through a Shrine Anchorite's chestplate from kilometres away. Such tanks are deployed near the great pilgrimage routes and passages to the Holy Land, where heavily protected, valuable targets justify their immense logistical burden.

For the visual presentation, I used a close-up, mid-level shot, filling most of the canvas with the tank and cropping parts of it out to emphasise its size. I chose harsh, flashlight-like lighting at night to suggest a sudden encounter from which you won't make it back alive.
